The Obligations of the Student Part 8

The Obligation to Dress the Part - Women

Introduction

Obedience is the grateful heart’s response to salvation.  Humble servants look to Scripture, not for how much liberty they have or how much they can get away with, but to search it for that thing that is most pleasing to Yahweh. “He who loves me keeps my commandments” (John 14:23)

When we become grafted into the nation of Israel, we take on its heritage in its fullest totality. We absorb ourselves into its identity in full, that is the chosen people of the Torah become our ancestors, as do the patriarchs and the matriarch’s become our forefathers. We no longer speak in the third person.

We do not approach this faith as a discipline that seasons our already establishes lives, we engulf ourselves in it’s all encompassing reality. It’s our complete identity! The one true faith of Yahweh, practiced for many centuries almost exclusively by the Jews becomes our religion! It’s yours now! We are Israel! Not spiritual Israel, denoting any distinction from its root, just plain Israel! It’s your religion, your people, your culture and it’s your clothing.

You’ve heard the expression; ‘you are what you eat.’ But you are also what you choose to wear!

It’s time to reconnect with our clothing!

You see originally, our first parents – Adam & Chavah (Eve) walked with Yahweh in the Garden of Eden totally naked except for the glory – the Divine Light emanating from them.  They were a spiritual being clothed with a physical body that was saturated in Yahweh’s glory. There was absolutely no shame.

However, once they broke that one command that Yahweh had given them. The one dietary law of not eating from the Tree of Knowledge, they betrayed the one part of Torah revealed to them. Suddenly, evil, doubt, alienation and shame flooded into their minds along with the knowledge that they were naked.  So, they clothed themselves with fig leaves.

Once Yahweh saw their condition he slew an animal and He made atonement to their condition by covering them in the skins. You see the Torah prescribes even what kind of clothes we wear.

In Hebrew the word for clothing is “begged” from the root “bagad” meaning “to betray or act faithlessly.” Now the word Hebrew itself denotes who we are, connecting ourselves to Avraham and this word is “ivri” in Hebrew and means “From Beyond.” So today’s subject is “Clothing from Beyond” (Begged Ivri).

When we think of spiritual warfare, our thinking is usually confined to the subject, of prayer, fasting, study of the Word and the ability to use that study to combat situations with the utterance of relevant Scripture.

Less well known is the role that clothing plays within this sphere of our faith, particularly as it pertains to woman. Why do women get singled out here? The answer is that woman are a more astutely designed than a man.

Their bodies and the way they move them have immense power to affect worlds, both for good and for bad. They are blessed with the ability to cause desire in a man and bring about perpetuation of the species, through having the ability to conceive offspring. Ironically their bodies go through a wider array of riggers than a man’s body and yet their beauty is superior and they generally live longer lives than men.

This being the case, their far superior design, if handled correctly through modesty enables them to pack a powerful punch against the dark forces. Conversely, if they misuse their bodies they can cause great damage to the forces of good.

The Israelite woman is one whose life is marked by prayer. A follower of Yahshua HaMoshiach makes prayer one of the sources of his daily strength. The veiling on an Israelite woman’s head is a symbol of her communion with Yahweh through prayer. “…a virtuous  wife…makes herself coverings” (Proverbs 31:10,22) Modesty is the most important duty a woman has in their obedience of the Torah. The real laws of modesty are not dictated by the fashion world, it’s dictated by the Torah. Walk down the street or in a crowed mall and you will see hundreds of women not passing their test.

What happened? One time a person makes a mistake and slips below the red line and then they do it a little bit more and a little bit more and then it becomes the norm. It becomes culturally accepted.

TZINIUT

In Hebrew the word for modesty is tzniut (Hebrew: צניעות, tzniut, Sephardi pronunciation, tzeniut(h); Ashkenazi pronunciation, tznius, "modesty", or "privacy"). Tzniut is used to describe both the character trait of modesty and humility, as well as a group of Jewish laws pertaining to conduct in general and especially between the sexes. The term is frequently used with regard to the rules of dress for women.

The concept of modesty is a difficult topic in this modern world. This idea hits western culture straight in the nose. In a world of "If you got it, flaunt it," modesty is a trait to be avoided, something primitive, reminding us of images of some ancient family photo of a stiff great-grandmother from Europe.

Some feel it forces a woman into hiding. But modesty does not mean a denial of self, nor does it force us into hiding. Rather, it creates a private area—a dignified space—in which we can work to excel, without concern for external judgment and approval. The rabbis even go so far as to say that "there is nothing more beautiful than modesty." In fact, the opposite is true in regard to restricting a woman. A woman who takes modesty seriously transforms worlds, repairs breaches and conquers countless dark entities every second that she practices this discipline.

In Scripture, we see modesty as a common attribute among the early matriarchs.

“Rebekah also looked up and saw Isaac…and asked the servant, ‘Who is that man in the field coming to meet us?’ ‘He is my master,’ the servant answered. So she took her veil and covered herself. (Genesis 24:64-65)”

“How beautiful you are, my darling! Oh, how beautiful! Your eyes behind your veil are doves. (Song of Songs 4:1a)”

Throughout Torah a woman’s modesty is praised as her most outstanding feature. In fact, modesty is mentioned as one of Yahweh’s chief requirements.  “It has been told you, O man, what is good, and what Elohim asks of you: Only that you do justice, love kindness, and walk modestly with your Elohim. (Micah 6:8)”

“When a wilful sinner comes, disgrace comes. But with modest ones [come] wisdom (Proverbs 11:2)”

What is the secret of the veil, the chief symbol of modesty? More important than what we are covering is what we are exposing. The most prominent parts of the body that are allowed to be seen are the face and the hands. These two body parts express the inner self. How? The face reveals who we are: the smile, the eyes (which are windows to the soul), facial expressions, etc. Our hands represent what we do, our endeavors in life. Here we have it: the face and the hands, people's inner content and their accomplishments. In other words, the part of ourselves that we may share with others is the spiritual self.

What are the requirements of tzniut? (refer to slide above)

“Therefore I want the men everywhere to pray, lifting up holy hands without anger or disputing. I also want the women to dress modestly, with decency and propriety, adorning themselves, not with elaborate hairstyles or gold or pearls or expensive clothes, but with good deeds, appropriate for women who profess to worship Elohim. (1 Timothy 2:8-10)”

Reclaiming the Original Faith

Part 1- No Compromise

Introduction:

It is my hope that through these teachings that we come firstly to see the enormous value of our faith which is more precious than gold and to realize how many assaults there have been made on the faith. Though Yisrael and the true faith has suffered many times we will see that YHWH has always used what the enemy meant for evil and turned it for good that many would be saved.

Through various examples I wish to encourage us to understand our unique challenges and privilege in seeing the will of YHWH fulfilled in the World. From this teaching I wish to demonstrate the influence that the World system has on us who are not exempt but by some examples I hope to show the favour of Elohim and his presence that ultimately brings the victory.

This will be a journey of refinement but will end with blessings and an understanding of the path that was clearly laid out but has been filled with many obstacles that desire to turn the people of YHWH to the left and the right:

B 2.JPG

Ibrim (Hebrew) 12:12-13 Therefore Strengthen the hands that hang down and the feeble knees,13 and make straight paths for your feet so that which is lame may not be turned out of the way but let it rather be healed.

Our desire therefore is to make our path straight that we may obtain the victory firstly over ourselves and also over the worldly influences which can only be achieved through the strengthening of the Ruach Ha Kodesh (the Holy Spirit) whom Yahshua promised is our help.

Compromising the Word of YHWH:

We begin our Journey with the Yisraelites coming into the Promised Land and see that they were not faithful to the words of YHWH to drive out the inhabitants of Canaan. As they compromised his Word by dwelling among the Canaanites we see how these inhabitants became a thorn in their side causing them to turn from their true faith which finally led to the dispersion of the ten northern tribes often called Yisrael by the Assyrian Empire and eventually the Captivity of Yahudah (Judah) in Babylon.

Melekim Beyth (2 Kings) 24:3 Surely at the Commandment of YHWH this came upon Yahudah (Judah) to remove them from his sight because of the sins of Manasseh according to all that he had done.

Dibre Ha Yamim Beyth (2 Chronicles) 36:19-20 And they burned the House of Elohim and broke down the wall of Yerushalayim and burned all its palaces with fire and destroyed all its valuable utensils. 20And those who escaped from the sword he exiled to Baḇel, where they became servants to him and his sons until the reign of the Kingdom of Persia.

As grim as this picture may seem YHWH was already at work as this is only the beginning of the inspiring tale of the young men that were taken captive among the many Yisraelites. These included Daniel and his friends ChananYah, Mishael and AzarYah. These men would ultimately infuse Yisrael with courage and inspiration as they demonstrated faith through various trials and then were victorious.

Nebuchadnezzar the King made the point to choose from among the Captives members of the Nobility since he had heard about their fabulous wisdom and wished therefore to use it. We will now begin to see how this King used a number of rather brilliant strategies to compromise all they had known to make their skills useful for him so it is to our advantage to see how we can learn from these principles that we may not be turned from our ways as well.

The Kings Strategy

  1. Instruction in New Ways

The first instruction of the King was to choose bright young men and teach them in the ways of this Pagan Empire.

Daniel 1:3-4 Then the king instructed Ashpenaz, the master of his eunuchs, to bring some of the children of Yisrael (Israel), from the Royal seed and some of the nobles, 4 young men in whom there was no blemish, but good-looking, skilful in all wisdom, discriminating in knowledge and perceptive in learning, who had ability to serve in the king’s palace, and whom they might teach the language and literature of the Chaldeans.

It is interesting to note that the King chose young flexible minds to instruct in the ways of this Kingdom in the hope of moulding them to serve him. In the teenage years this truth is most paramount so this Pagan King knew all the tricks and employed them very well. We are not talking about a casual instruction but a daily barrage of instruction dealing with every aspect of daily life in Babylon whether it was Religion, politics, education, culture or Law. The hope was to transform their entire way of thinking to suit the King that they would be useful to him.

It has been noted that when young students who come from a Religious Background enter University to study Science or Philosophy as few as 5% leave University believing because of the constant barrage of thinking that is opposed to the ways of Elohim. This is the World we live in so we need to understand how these young men were able to withstand this constant indoctrination into these foreign ways.

When we read the events that occurred during the time of YermeYahu (Jeremiah) we see a total decline of Yerushalayim under King TsidqiYah (Zedekiah) but we can easily lose sight of the fact that unlike many in Yerushalayim these young men were brought up under a strongly Torah based instruction even though as a Nation Yisrael was declining and absorbing much Pagan worship especially that of Ba’al which ultimately brought on the promised judgement of YHWH which led to its Captivity.

From understanding the way these young men who are referred to as Children were educated we receive a truth about the power of Torah enrichment to the Young:

Mishle (Proverbs) 22:6 Train up a child in the way he should go, And when he is old he will not depart from it.

It was therefore this rich instruction and observance of Torah that sustained these young men even though they no longer had the Temple or the ability to study Torah as they formerly had. Compiled with this was surely there love and passion for YHWH whom they believed in without a doubt even though the whole Nation had fallen under the power of this Kingdom that now ruled them.

From the example of these young Men we need to learn if we are to stand against the daily indoctrination of the World we must have a love for YHWH & we must learn to fill ourselves with his Torah lest we be consumed by the constant assaults of the World that comes to us from every angle. When we have such a passionate love for Yahweh and his Word we will understand what this verse really means:

MattithYAHU (Matthew) 4:4 “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of YHWH.’”  (Devarim (Deut) 8:3)

  1. A Change in Identity

In Ancient cultures unlike today the name you gave your Son or Daughter was greatly influenced by your belief & your desire to influence their future. In the Hebrew culture names were more than just labels that sound good as they are today, since they clearly described something they believed. Babylon understood this concept so the Chief of the Eunuchs gave new names to the young men:

The Name Dani’el meant “EL is my Judge” & to him the King through the Master of the Eunuchs gave the name Belteshazzar meaning “Bel (the Pagan Elohim) guard the Prince.”

To ChananYah meaning “Yah has Favoured” he gave the name Shadrach meaning “Command of Aku” being the Babylonian Elohim (God) of the Moon.

To Misha’el meaning “who is like El” he gave the name Meshach meaning “who is what Aku is.”

To AzarYah meaning “YAH is my helper” he gave the name Abed-Nego meaning “servant of Nego” another Pagan Elohim (God) known also as Nebo the Elohim of wisdom/ brightness.

From this change in identity it was hoped that all memory of their former life would gradually disappear. The constant reference to the Elohim of the Babylonians was a constant affront to the Elohim of Yisrael since we know what the Torah says in:

Shemoth (Exodus) 23:13 And in all that I have said to you take heed. And make no mention of the name of other mighty ones, let it not be heard from your mouth.

This was all an elaborate well-conceived plan that had been successful with many of the diverse captives but with these young men it could not succeed. Within this process is a great teaching for us about the diverse schemes of the World to seduce the faithful away from the path to a path of least resistance. The key we find within these young men is that they had been so engrossed in the knowledge of Torah that their love for YHWH their Elohim so consumed them that even with everything taken away even their own identity nothing could dissuade them to change their long held belief though the conquering Kingdom was so meticulous in its attempt.

We need to understand the power of Identity! Do you realize that every Prophet’s name spoke volumes about their faith! Elijah (EliYAH) actually means “my EL (God) is YAH” & Isaiah (YeshiYAHU) means “YAHU is salvation.” There is however more that we can learn from this however in that the world is forever drawing us into its mould in the hope of changing our identity. Hebrew parents knew that to keep faith alive in their children it was most useful to give them names that would remind them who they were or whose they were. We could learn this lesson too! Also we need to teach our Children that there identity is not found by looking, talking & acting like the world which is compromise but it is found in Yahshua Ha Moshiach (the Messiah) our Saviour, redeemer, King & Elohim.

That was not only in name & character but in the first Century it was also in appearance as the believers were extremely Hebraic but through the inclusion of Gentiles the Assemblies the Kehilot in appearance drastically changed.

Under Emperor Constantine everything that was Hebrew such as the Shabbat, the Feasts and everything Hebrew was banned based on the Constantine Creed which left the world with an Ecclesia (Assembly of the called) devoid of all the appearance of its Hebraicnessbeing replaced with a new set of values:

Quote from the Constantine Creed:

Furthermore, any follower of the “Jewish Messiah” (Yeshua HaMoshiach) who wished to join this “holy community” was compelled to adopt a different set of rules and customs. Subsequently special creeds were drafted, to which the Christian would have to swear such as:

“I accept all customs, rites, legalism, and feasts of the Romans, sacrifices. Prayers, purifications with water, sanctifications by Pontificus Maxmus (high priests of Rome), propitiations, and feasts, and the New Sabbath “So! dei” (day of the Sun, ), all new chants and observances, and all the foods and drinks of the Romans. In other words, I absolutely accept everything Roman, every new law, rite and custom, of Rome, and the New Roman Religion.”

What we can learn from Daniel & his friends is that their strong faith in the ways of YAHWEH could not be shaken so they remained faithful to all that they were taught during their Torah based upbringing.

If we believe that we have the calling to reveal the true faith of Yisrael apart from all the ways of compromise we need to be like these men who stood strong in the face of Elevation to the highest positions in the Kingdom and also in the face of expected death to which YHWH the Elohim of these faithful men was greatly praised. It is for us to be strong in recognizing the importance of our identity as Netzarim and I hope we are not afraid of placing our faith over the acceptance of the world, which will surely bring the blessings of YHWH as well.

  1. The Breakdown of Covenant

Daniel 1:5 And the king appointed for them a daily provision of the king’s delicacies and of the wine which he drank, and three years of training for them, so that at the end of that time they might serve before the king.

The 3rd great challenge that we find Daniel & his friends faced was in the area of the foods that would be provided for them. This constituted much more than the value of food but rather was a Covenant issue. It is interesting that this same Challenge fell to Adam & Chavah (Eve) since the only command that they received in “Gan Eden” the Garden of Eden was with regard the eating of the fruit of the tree of good and evil. Also we see clearly expressed through Noach (Noah) the same importance associated with clean and unclean animals and then Yisrael was given through Mosheh clear instructions concerning “Kosher” foods which would act as a sign that the Yisraelites were set apart for Yahweh. This then becomes the background to which Daniel was so greatly influenced.

The King was surely aware of the restrictions imposed on the Yahudim (Jews) through their Religion so it was not just about making them healthy but so much more. To submit to the King’s wishes meant eating food & drink that had been devoted to Idols thereby to indulge in this was to give honour to those Pagan Deities something strictly forbidden in the Ten Covenant Words (the Ten Commandments) especially the Worship of Idols. But more than this it was to go against the covenant words of the Most high something that Daniel & his friends were not willing to do.

According to the Sages (Sanhedrin 93b) Daniel & his companions are alluded to in:

YeshiYahu (Isaiah) 56:4-5 For thus says YHWH: “To the eunuchs who keep My Sabbaths,
And choose what pleases Me, And hold fast My covenant, 5 Even to them I will give in My house and within My walls a place and a name Better than that of sons and daughters; I will give them an everlasting name that shall not be cut off.

Since Daniel had been named for a Babylonian Idol he suspected that he was being consecrated to this Idol and that the food were animals sacrificed to the idol including wine used for libations:

Since the Torah commands total abstinence from objects used in the worship of Idols Daniel needed to suffer death rather than submit:

The “Halachah” requires that one submit to death rather than transgress in a situation where there is an intent to estrange a Yahudi (Jew) from his Religion (Malbim cf Sanhedrin 74b)

Their obedience however resulted in them looking extremely good. The inner peace resulting from the fulfilment of the will of YHWH radiated outward and greatly enhanced their appearance. It is also thought that because of their earnestness YHWH also miraculously caused them to be fatter though their foods were of grains and vegetables.

Today we have been given a great opportunity to demonstrate that same passion for the Covenant of Yahweh. More than just a matter of being obedient to YHWH’s Mitsvot (Commands) we also face the question of honouring a foreign Mighty one every time we go to the Supermarket.

How many items do you find on the shelf in your local Supermarket that say “Halal.” This is a term used whereby that product has been devoted to the Elohim (God) of Islam. We may not consider this as of great importance but the Hebrews certainly did. What other Covenants did these Pagans endeavour to draw these young Hebrews from. Could this include Circumcision a tenant of the Abrahamic Covenant or could it be the Shabbat (Sabbath day) a commandment given them by the Mosaic Covenant? We are not told in the book of Daniel but the enemy of our soul always wishes us to break covenant & he uses every possible subtle way at his disposal.

Daniel’s answer to Compromise:

When we think of the degree of pressure coming upon these young men who were Children and thought to be between 14 and 17 we surely are amazed that they exhibited such great faith. Knowing that the Pagan King was presenting them with such promises of great wealth & power if they attended him the words of Daniel serve us well to Challenge us when faced with opportunities that may temp us to compromise:

Daniel 1:8 But Dani’ĕl laid it upon his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the sovereign’s food, nor with the wine which he drank. So he asked permission from the chief of the eunuchs not to defile himself. 9 And Elohim granted Dani’ĕl kindness and compassion from the chief of the eunuchs,

In our journey of establishing an uncompromising heart it is interesting to note that because Daniel had purposed in his heart not to defile himself we see YHWH moving in the situation to cause Ashpenaz the chief Eunuch to show Kindness to Daniel. This in its self is a demonstration of how significant Yahweh the Elohim of Yisrael considers his Covenant Commandments since we see how greatly Daniel was elevated and even given Prophetic understanding above his friends because it was him that risked his life in this endeavour because to defy the King meant death.

The Inspiration of Daniel:

From this episode in the epic saga of Yisrael we receive many gems of inspiration:

  1. Even when things seem grim and all seems lost, YHWH is working to fulfil his purpose though he seems remote.

  1. Though the world is at work to corrupt young flexible minds the key to victory is that we are to bring up a child in the ways of Torah and believe that YHWH will keep his seed alive to establish his Covenant in them.

  1. If we truly see our identity in YHWH & his Covenant we will endeavour to display it & not compromise to appease the World around. This may mean that we wear “Tzitsit” (tassels) or we may make it clear among friends that we keep the Feasts of YHWH and that they are not Jewish. Also we will be passionate to keep the Shabbat & attend the Covenant fellowship to honour YHWH. We will also make it our passion to let our friends and family know that keeping “Kosher” for us is a matter of love and obedience for YAHWEH and is not legalistic observance.

  1. When we lay it upon our heart not to defile ourselves in any areas of the Covenant, YHWH will bring powerful blessings in our life if we take an uncompromising stance like Daniel.

  1. The benefit of our Covenant relationship far out ways anything that the World could give us since we believe that through our demonstration of love for YHWH we will receive greater intimacy with him which would be enough but we believe he will also bless us with many spiritual blessings as we saw in the life of Daniel.

Conclusion

We read in the Brit Chadashah what I consider a definitely important word from the Master that has often been misunderstood and that we should have a better revelation of:

Ephesians 5:26-27 Messiah also did love the assembly and gave Himself for it, 26 in order to set it apart and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word, 27 in order to present it to Himself a splendid assembly, not having spot or wrinkle or any of this sort, but that it might be set-apart and blameless.

These verses speak of Moshiach (Messiah) giving his life to redeem his people from the power of sin so that she like a bride would then be purified by his Word the Torah being an ongoing process.

Because he has redeemed her he also desires to cleanse her whom he loves from every form of sin & evil and therefore become like him the righteous one. This can only be achieved by obedience to all his Torah his set-apart instructions which is the way of purity. How can this be interpreted any other way. We may not be perfect but it is his desire that we work towards total Righteous living and amazingly the Hebrew wedding tradition shows us that even the Groom traditionally paid a ransom for his bride if she in any way was found not to have totally succeeded in being what he expected.

We now have been given the great privilege of demonstrating to our Husband Yahshua Ha Moshiach (the Messiah) that we are his faithful bride and that we desire to hold fast to all he has said without compromise and now await his beloved coming every single day knowing that he will receive us with such joy.

Amein.

The Obligation not to Waste Time

The Obligations of the Student Part 7

(Slide) The faith of Yahweh is very confronting. Sacred names and the Torah aside, it isn’t easy for one who wants to keep their relationship with the Father at arm’s length, to truly walk in His ways. His counsel should continue to challenge and provoke us at every turn.

This walk constantly calls us from our comfort zone and puts us at odds with the masses. Speaking frankly, if I may, it ruins your life. What does that mean?
It means it ruins ruined living! Walking in truth ruins ruined living! It puts us to death! We crucify our former selves.
Crucifixion is a painful death.

Today we have a very limited idea of crucifixion. There was no official, regularly-practiced method.

Few victims were crucified with nails through their palms. A victim’s whole weight on this relatively delicate area would cause the hand to tear enough that the person could pull the nail through the whole hand and free their upper bodies. People were crucified through the wrists, which were harder to tear loose. Anatomists know that the wrist and the hand are included together when describing the general area of the hand.

Nailing a person's feet to the upright section of the cross wasn't an afterthought. Precisely how the lower body was treated could affect how long a person lived. Most victims simply had their feet nailed into the wood so that their knees were bent at forty-five degree angles. Some had their legs broken. Whether this was an act of cruelty or mercy depends on one's perspective.

Hanging from the arms for any considerable length of time is painful. Once the muscles give out it is excruciating. Shoulders separate from the sockets and the overall arm can lengthen by inches. Most people would try to support themselves by putting pressure on their injured feet, but with their legs bent and their feet nailed through it was only a matter of time before their leg strength gave way as well. Breaking their legs was horrible, but on the other hand, allowing them to support themselves prolonged their suffering.

What part of their suffering lead to death is debatable. One doctor believed that crucified people, after much torment, died via a "voluntary surrender of life." Some think that the wounds elsewhere in the body sent a blood clot to the heart. One expert in forensic medicine, Frederick Zugibe, actually tied himself and volunteers to a cross to monitor what physically takes place during a crucifixion. He concluded that victims died from "hypovolemic shock." This condition sets in when a body has lost so much blood and fluid that the heart can't continue to function.

Most experts agree, though, that what ultimately kills a crucified person is suffocation. Either the body loses so much oxygen that the person smothers, or the carbon dioxide level in the body goes up so much that the body tissues turn acidic and destroy their own cells. How fast it happens depends on a lot of factors.

To be crucified was the greatest shame imaginable, and we are commanded to own that shame as having been our own. “Therefore let us go to Him outside the camp, bearing the disgrace He bore. (Hebrews 13:13)” In crucifixion there was no dignity afforded the victim.

-

(Slide) Such a one was not given the dignity of being clothed or was he able to repel flies of birds of prey. Leading up to the impaling was a heaving flogging, which was designed to wear down the victim. Once hung it would be impossible to retain control over bodily functions. It causes the body to distort and become covered in blood, sweat, urine and faeces.

In Jewish Halacha there is a law concerning inflicting discipline on a minor that is interesting. If a father strikes his child with a rod to discipline him and he raises the rod and the child wets himself there is a curious ruling. If this happens, the father cannot strike the child. Why? Because shame is considered worse punishment than the pain he was about to inflict.

Anyone who tells you that walking this walk will relieve you of the need to put in time and effort and even suffering, they haven’t read the Word they purport to follow. On the contrary, the word tells us to weigh up the cost.

"If anyone comes to me and does not hate father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters--yes, even their own life--such a person cannot be my disciple. And whoever does not carry their gallows and follow me cannot be my disciple. Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Won't you first sit down and estimate the cost to see if you have enough money to complete it? For if you lay the foundation and are not able to finish it, everyone who sees it will ridicule you, saying, 'This person began to build and wasn't able to finish.' "Or suppose a king is about to go to war against another king. Won't he first sit down and consider whether he is able with ten thousand men to oppose the one coming against him with twenty thousand? If he is not able, he will send a delegation while the other is still a long way off and will ask for terms of peace. In the same way, those of you who do not give up everything you have cannot be my disciples. Salt is good, but if it loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? (Luke 14:26-35)” If one is reluctant to give time, effort and even resources toward the kingdom, why should they think that if the time arises they would give up their very life?

What type of a religion’s catch-cry is “Join with us and suffer?” Ours.

“Join with me in suffering, like a good soldier of Yahshua HaMoshiach. No one serving as a soldier gets entangled in civilian affairs, but rather tries to please his commanding officer. Similarly, anyone who competes as an athlete does not receive the victor’s crown except by competing according to the rules. The hardworking farmer should be the first to receive a share of the crops. Reflect on what I am saying, for Yahweh will give you insight into all this. Remember Yahshua HaMoshiach, raised from the dead, descended from David. This is the full measure of my good news, for which I am suffering even to the point of being chained like a criminal. But Elohim’s word is not chained. Therefore, I endure everything for the sake of the elect, that they too may obtain the salvation that is in Yahshua HaMoshiach, with eternal glory. Here is a trustworthy saying: If we died with him, we will also live with him; if we endure, we will also reign with him. If we disown him, he will also disown us; if we are faithless, he remains faithful, for he cannot disown himself. Know that we, in this life are beset upon by many things, but in just a little while we shall receive a crown of life. (2 Timothy 2:1-13)” Our walk is not dissimilar to that of a soldier. In fact, it’s exactly the same. Nothing’s different!

In a letter to a Jewish army Chaplin in 1976, Rebbe Menachem Schneerson wrote this:

“Every Jew is always a ‘soldier’ in the service of Gd, including the duty of spreading Gdliness among fellow-Jews, with emphasis on the actual deed, namely, fulfillment of Gd's commands, the Mitzvos, in the daily life…“The whole military establishment is based on discipline and obedience to orders. A soldier receiving an order from his commanding officer must carry it out promptly, even if it may seem irrational to him. No soldier can claim that his conduct is his personal affair, and he is prepared to take the consequences, for the consequences would not be confined to him, but to the entire sector, with far-reaching consequences in a time of emergency for the entire front and the country. A further point is that it is quite irrelevant if in civilian life the private was superior to his commanding officer in other areas, in physics, astronomy, and the like; in the military, he must bow to the superiority of his commander, who is the expert.

All these points and the whole military training and environment make the Jewish serviceman particularly responsive to Yiddishkeit (Judaism).”

Now this is talking about Judaism, but it is no different to our faith in this regard. In fact, this letter attests that Judaism is the same faith in this aspect as the one being spoken about in 2 Timothy 2

You are different. Like a soldier is different. A Soldier thinks differently to a civilian. He dressing differently, he maintains his surroundings differently, he even sleeps and eats differently. There’s regimentation to what he does. He is always alert and ready.

A soldier is willing to get his hands dirty for a cause.

“You suffered along with those in prison and joyfully accepted the confiscation of your property, because you knew that you yourselves had better and lasting possessions. So do not throw away your confidence; it will be richly rewarded. You need to persevere so that when you have done the will of Elohim, you will receive what he has promised. For, in just a little while, he who is coming will come and will not delay. And, but my righteous one will live by faith. And I take no pleasure in the one who shrinks back. But we do not belong to those who shrink back and are destroyed, but to those who have faith and are saved. (Hebrews 10:34-39)”

In other words, work hard, because slackers don’t make it.

Now we’ve got that out of the way.

Okay, there’s a good chance that most of us haven’t been walking the correct work before we came to know about the Torah, the Sabbaths and the Covenant, truth be told even now, some things need to be rectified. So we’ve largely squandered our time in loose living. So how do we fix that? Is lost time simply lost time that we are never destined to get back. Certainly being “born again” doesn’t reset back to the beginning of our lives.

“Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, redeeming the time, because the days are evil. Therefore, do not be foolish, but understand what the will of Adonai is.” (Ephesians 5:15-17)

“Now listen, you who say, ‘Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money.’ Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes. Instead, you ought to say, ‘If it is Yahweh’s will, we will live and do this or that.’” (James 4:13-15) Time seems to slip away from us so easily, seemingly out of our control. There are only so many hours in a day, a week, and a year. However, Yahweh created time and gave it to us to manage.

“Show me, Yahweh, my life's end and the number of my days; let me know how fleeting my life is. You have made my days a mere handbreadth; the span of my years is as nothing before you. Everyone is but a breath, even those who seem secure. "Surely everyone goes around like a mere phantom; in vain they rush about, heaping up wealth without knowing whose it will finally be. "But now, Yahweh, what do I look for? My hope is in you. (Psalm 39:4-7)”

Our days are numbered by Yahweh. Time or the counting of our numbered days is the most precious resource we have, which is why we need to regularly evaluate and manage our time according to Yahweh’s purpose for your life.

“My days are swifter than a weaver's shuttle, and they come to an end without hope.” (Job 7:6) When a person thinks they are dying, they immediately reflect on their life, what they spent their time doing and if they felt that they wasted it, this is the biggest regret as they take their last breath.

“The steps of a good man are ordered by Yahweh: and he delights in his way.” (Psalm 37:23)

“Man's days are determined; you have decreed the number of his months and have set limits he cannot exceed. (Job 14:5)”

“Trust in Yahweh with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths. (Proverbs 3:5, 6)”

“Your word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path. (Psalm 119:105)”

In other words, By Yahweh’s Torah I can see where I'm going; they throw a beam of light on my dark road.

The more effort we put into Yahweh, the more effort He puts into us. So to, the more people we have who are committed in all areas of their walk, the more opportunity leaders and teachers have to focus on the message. How so? If we have enough regular funds and resources then we can have people in leadership that can withdraw from secular life and focus 100% on nurturing and feeding people.

“…the laborer is worthy of his hire.” (Luke 10:7)

“The elders who direct the affairs of the congregation are well worthy of double honor, especially those whose work is preaching and teaching. For the Scripture says, ‘Do not muzzle the ox while it is treading out the grain,’ (Deuteronomy 25:4) and ‘The worker deserves his wages.’ (Luke 10:7)” (1Timothy 5:17, 18)

“If we have sown spiritual seed among you, is it too much if we reap a material harvest from you? If others have this right of support from you, shouldn't we have it all the more? But we did not use this right. On the contrary, we put up with anything rather than hinder the full message of Messiah. Don't you know that those who work in the Temple get their food from the Temple, and those who serve at the Altar share in what is offered on the Altar? In the same way, Yahweh has commanded that those who preach the full message should receive their living from the message.” (1 Corinthians 9:11-14)

The word used in Ephesians 5 for “redeem” is the Greek word ἐξαγοράζω eksägorä'zōmeaningto redeem or to make wise and sacred use of every opportunity.” It is translated from the Hebrew phrase דִּי עִדָּנָא “di iydänä” meaning “to make the most of.” So, in this passage we are commanded to “make the most of our time, or the days will work against us.”

If you do not manage your time life becomes disorganised. You become “governed by the tyranny of the urgent.” (“Parkinson’s Law,” by Cyril Northcote Parkinson, The Economist, 1955)

“For, ‘Whoever would love life and see good days must keep his tongue from evil and his lips from deceitful speech. He must turn from evil and do good; he must seek peace and pursue it. For the eyes of Yahweh are on the righteous and his ears are attentive to their prayer, but the face of Yahweh is against those who do evil.’ (Psalm 34:12-16)” (1 Peter 3:10-12)

That takes time management.

How can you know if you’re not managing your time effectively? There are some traits: clutter in your house, car, desk, or any horizontal surfaces you have dominion over; series of undone, forgotten tasks and appointments; you would rather spend energy in satisfying but unproductive tasks; feeling poorly about your work; your life comes under the influence of dominant people around you; you surrender to the demands of the emergency; and you no longer enjoy intimacy, even with Yahweh. If you have any of these symptoms, you need to learn to redeem your time. Your life is out of control.

The Scottish preacher Alexander MacLaren (1826–1910) once said: "No unwelcome tasks become any the less unwelcome by putting them off till tomorrow. It is only when they are behind us and done, that we begin to find that there is a sweetness to be tasted afterwards, and that the remembrance of unwelcome duties unhesitatingly done is welcome and pleasant. Accomplished, they are full of blessing, and there is a smile on their faces as they leave us. Undone, they stand threatening and disturbing our tranquility, and hindering our communion with [Yahweh]. If there be lying before you any bit of work from which you shrink, go straight up to it, and do it at once. The only way to get rid of it is to do it."

Matthew, Mark, Luke and John are just big travel journals of King Messiah YahShua’s life and mission. For instance, in Luke 9:51 King Messiah YahShua announced that it was time to make their way to Jerusalem. However, instead of just going up to Jerusalem, a lot of other things happened. Here are some highlights: Luke 10, the Messiah takes time to send out 70 of His followers on training mission; Luke 10-13 we see the Messiah taking out time to visit people in their homes; Luke 13 the Messiah stops and teaches in each of the villages He passes along the way from Galilee to Judea; He was interrupted constantly on His way by lepers calling out to Him and He took the time to heal them (Luke 17:11-19), a blind man called out to Him and again He took the time to heal him (Luke 18:31-43), and when He sees the tax collector Zacheus He takes time out to go and stay at his house (Luke 19:1-8). It seems that by the time of the blind man showed up the disciples were getting awfully impatient.

Was King Messiah YahShua managing His time well? Well, let’s look for any symptoms. With all of these so-called interruptions along the way YahShua stops but never seems frantic or stressed; never seems to have to play "catch up"; never do we get the sense that He’s "behind schedule"; He even manages to spend time alone time regularly in prayer. King Messiah YahShua was redeeming the time.

King Messiah Yahshua’s mission was not just to go to Jerusalem; there was something way bigger.

“I was sent only to the Lost Sheep of Israel.” (Matthew 15:24)

King Messiah YahShua had a clear sense of mission. “YahShua said to him, ‘Today salvation has come to this house, because this man, too, is a son of Abraham. For the Son of Man came to seek and to save what was lost. (Luke 19:9, 10)’”

He ordered his time according to his sense of mission. Everything He did was to express His mission to gather up Israel, wherever they may be found and to join them with Judah and reform the Kingdom of Yahweh.

Do you understand your mission?

“Do not go the way of the Gentiles or enter any town of the Samaritans. Go rather to the Lost Sheep of Israel. As you go, preach this message: ‘The Kingdom of Heaven is near.’” (Matthew 10:5-7)

Everything in your life should go to support that mission.

Every successful business has a clear mission statement. Do you know what ours is?

It is our single purpose to be a Community of Yahweh, which strives to proclaim the saving full message of YahShua the Messiah as revealed in the Scriptures, by which alone man can know the true Elohim and the way to eternal life. This our purpose and commitment rests upon the following statements of the Scriptures:

“All authority in Heaven and on earth has been given to Me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, immersing them in the name of the Father by authority of the Son through the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” (Matthew 28:18-20)

This is our responsibility; this is our commandment; this is our commission; and this is our message: “And this Full Messianic Message of the Kingdom will be preached in all the world as a witness to all the nations, and then the end will come.” (Matthew 24:14) Can you articulate your mission in life?

“So teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.” (Psalm 90:12)

Time is the most precious resource that we have stewardship of. Just as you budget your money, you should budget your time.

How does one budget their time?

  • Recognize your strengths and limitations. When are you at your strongest or weakest? Are you a morning person, a noonday person or a night person? Whatever kind of person you are your time with prayer – communication with Yahweh. Just as knowing what kind of day person you are, you must ask what part of the week, month or year is your strongest? Once you know that you know when your when and how to harvest your time.
  • Prioritize your time. Identify the non-negotiables. Your secular job demands a certain amount of your time. However, remember family is more important than job. So, make sure you reserve quality time for them.  Yahweh commands a certain amount of your time: prayer time during the day, Sabbath Days, and New Moons. These are non-negotiables. Your job may be more demanding and urgent, but it is not as important as serving Yahweh. Now you may be treating Yahweh’s time as optional and if you are then you are a time bandit. Over time, time stealing will take its toll. Time with Yahweh is sacred and unapologetic.
  • Have a workable criteria for managing your time. Identify what is important and allocate time for it. Identify what is not important and treat it as such. Identify what is killing your time and avoid it.
  • All time has to be managed and all of your activities must be noted.
  • Make time to work your mission.
